It all starts with a ring...

Welcome to Olivia Rose Weddings & Events "Back to basics" series! Here I'll explore all the industry know how and top tips from the key suppliers to help first time couples through the wedding planning process - expertly advised by the best industry professionals, I'll give you the tricks of the trade so you feel confident when planning your special day.

Where best to start than where it all begins - with a ring!

I sat down to discuss all things sparkly with Joseph Blackmore from G Tydeman Jewellers of Bury Street, Stowmarket. The very well established independent, family run business, priding themselves on the quality of their service, knowledge and professionalism. Let's not forget the pure passion that is invested into all their customers!

I asked Joseph about all the key things that will help prepare you for that first trip, whether that be engagement ring shopping *GULP* or Wedding Band browsing [insert excited clapping here] in readiness for that big day...

First things first is choosing a Jewellers that you can trust, you really want to choose somewhere that you know is going to not only be trustworthy (!) but one that is going to be transparent, upfront and honest. Whilst personal integrity and first impressions say a lot, you can always keep an eye out for whether your jeweller is a member of either CMJ (Company of Master Jewellers) which support independent retailers, or the NAJ (National Association of Jewellers) which ensures retailers abide by Codes of Conduct - really giving you piece of mind and confidence when purchasing jewellery. Without this rapport and relationship, you can't fully invest into finding the perfect ring and as Joseph told me, perfect isn't always what you have in mind! But you need someone you feel you can trust to guide you through this process...

It was really clear when speaking with Joseph that perfect has so many dimensions, and whilst you may have a design in mind, the design may not be right for you! Joseph used the example of an office worker who has a profound hobby of rock climbing at the weekends and says they never wants to take their ring off - Joseph said they probably shouldn't be setting their heart on a White Gold ring! Instead perhaps looking at a Platinum band to withstand the toughest of sports! And as Joseph pointed out, just because the material has changed, that doesn't necessarily mean you need to go out of budget; by looking at band thickness, stone settings and size, normally a solution isn't far away. Joseph says this is why a personalised approach is so important when choosing a ring, so you know you're getting your perfect!

A key part for Tydeman's is their Customer Service and a personalised approach, and much like any business they look to create a bond that encourages and paths a way for return support. Joseph said for many, when they go to purchase an Engagement ring or Wedding Ring, it's their first time in a jewellers (they may have been window shopping for years but never ventured inside). Tydeman's look to create an atmosphere that welcomes customers, children (and even pets!) to relax and enjoy the experience. This applies across the board for Tydeman's rings, their bespoke customers and watches; they create this experience for someone coming in looking to spend £40 or £4000!

Regardless of the product, but most importantly when choosing a ring, it's important to let your jeweller know some key details; this not only manages your expectations but also helps your jeweller plan a seamless service. Joseph says the key thing he wants to know from couples when discussing engagement rings or wedding band purchases is; the date of the big day (and perhaps the destination!) Joseph said at present, a diamond set ring can take up to 4 weeks to be made - that's without taking into account the additional services they offer; polishing and cleaning of the ring, oh and a clean and polish of your engagement ring - all ready for them to be sparkling on their big day too!

Joseph enlightened me to a service he and Tydeman's provide, one of which he is seeing an increasing demand for- bespoke services. Trends and experience is showing that the nature of a bespoke service is going to be increasing in popularity, with increased awareness and investment in sustainability many are now choosing to recreate, recycle or rejuvenate pieces of jewellery or invest time, ideas and creativity in designing a piece which perfectly fits your desires. Joseph explained his passion of crafting bespoke pieces to really make the customer overwhelmed in emotion (happy tears of course!) The service Joseph and the team at Tydeman's provide in sketching, modelling, sourcing, and making their products really is second to none. If you would like to understand more around Tydeman's bespoke service, or wish to discuss how they can create a unique piece for you, I highly encourage you to get in touch - their passion will draw you in on its own!

I asked Joseph about the fashion of the industry - is there a designer who takes precedence, a style, a trend?? But unlike most sections of the Wedding industry Joseph feels jewellery mostly is personal preference! Whilst Joseph acknowledges there are trends in the trade, it isn't overly prominent with many still opting for traditional styles, timeless settings or recreations of sentimental heirlooms. It would appear that with jewellery and particularly Engagement and Wedding rings, most people have a personal preference, or an idea/style in mind. Be sure when speaking with your jeweller that you share whether being on trend is important to you, or whether you have other ideas in mind!

I spoke about so much with Joseph that I couldn't fit into this post, but don't worry I'm sure I'll be back in touch in the future and can share more knowledge! But what I did find was Joseph's passion and wealth of knowledge was infectious, this is what I personally really liked about Tydeman's. When talking to Joseph I felt reassured that the interaction I was getting was honest, true, passionate and trustworthy - when you know, you know!

So finally... As part of this series, you'll see every supplier provide their top 3 tips for choosing and dealing with their industry *take note*

  1. Make the appointments personal! Make sure your jeweller gets to know you - your likes, dislikes, hobbies and occupations! This will most certainly build solid foundations for your journey into choosing your perfect ring. Please make sure before you buy, you're not just getting what you like, but what you want in a ring! Be aware - this takes time...

  2. Allow time! As hinted, this process can take time. Ensure you allow yourself time not only to browse, but for a sufficient appointment, to return to make sure you're happy and also a lead time for getting your item made.

  3. Make sure the jewellers you choose are transparent with you! Trust is built with transparency and honesty, in pricing, sourcing, services and relationships.
